Some of the more control heavy Dredge lists also run cards like Force of Negation and Unmask to disrupt their opponent’s gameplan and to protect their own spells and creatures. Once this engine is online creatures like Ichorid, Prized Amalgam, and Narcomoeba team up with spells like Cabal Therapy and Bridge from Below to create a board state chock full of creatures so quickly that their opponents just concede game without playing any cards so that the Dredge player goes into game 2 without any knowledge of what their opponent is playing.ĭredge in the Vintage format has taken on many forms over the years, from “pedal to the metal” lists which focus on being aggressive and attempting to overwhelm their opponents with creatures with no regard for what their opponent’s gameplan is relying on Cabal Therapy as double-duty disruption and creature generation with Bridge from Below to quickly amass an army of Zombies to make quick work of their opponent, sometimes as early as turn 1 or 2 with a Dread Return on Flame-kin Zealot or Dragonlord Kolaghan to “Pitch Dredge” lists, earning its name from the action of “pitching” a card to cast Force of Will using its alternate casting cost. Vintage Dredge players get to do this by relying on the effect of Serum Powder and aggressive mulliganing to improve their odds of starting the game with at least one copy of Bazaar of Baghdad, which simultaneously does both things a Dredge player needs to do to accelerate their gamestate, it draws cards and lets you selectively discard. In fact, many Vintage Dredge pilots opt for builds that do not even run a single mana producing land (except maybe their own Wasteland or Strip Mine). In a format in which most archetypes rely heavily on using cards like Force of Will, Wasteland, Strip Mine, Thorn of Amethyst, and other forms of countermagic, disruption or taxing effects to slow their opponents while they setup their own win, Dredge can close out a game in a matter of minutes without ever using any mana and in some cases without casting any spells. When it comes to the Vintage format, very few archetypes have ever been as frightening to players as Dredge. Ahh, Vintage Dredge – bringing a shovel to a knife fight.
